Feis Ceoil Supported by the RDS Moves Online.

The Feis, as it is affectionately known is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The event is an essential element in the musical infrastructure of the country, and throughout the decades almost every classical Irish musician has competed at Feis Ceoil. The Festival this year, will take place virtually from March 15-26.

During these COVID times, young people around Ireland have been showing great resilience, playing and practicing in bedrooms, kitchens and music rooms across the country. Unable to attend in person lessons and rehearsals, they have remained optimistic and connected online with teachers and peers. One of the ways that their hard work will be supported and acknowledged is through the Feis Ceoil moving online in 2021.

“The Feis team believes that our loyal competitors deserve the opportunity this platform affords them, especially given the sudden but unavoidable cancellation of the March 2020 event,” said CEO of Feis Ceoil Association Laura Gilsenan.  “This also ensures that the ongoing significant portfolio of awards and bursaries - including qualification for the €15k RDS Bursary - is made available to competitors from around the country. After 125 years, the Feis is determined to do all it can to support young musicians who have been so impacted by the last year.”

Through key partners such as the RDS, Feis Ceoil can deliver the Festival in this new and innovative way. 

“The Feis Ceoil is rightly recognised as the most important classical music competition in Ireland and we are delighted that it is proceeding virtually this year in response to Covid-19 restrictions.” said Geraldine Ruane, Chief Executive of the RDS. “Support for young Irish musicians is a vital way in which the RDS realises its mission of seeing Ireland thrive culturally and economically, and we are very pleased to continue our support for this year's competition." 

136 Feis Ceoil competitions will take place online in 2021, aiming to keep as close to the spirit of a ‘normal’ Feis as possible. Competitions requiring large gatherings such as choir and orchestra will not take place in 2021.
