The RDS Writer-in-Residence, in partnership with The Stinging Fly Magazine, is a pilot project which supports a talented emerging writer who seeks a professional career in writing by engaging them to produce a creative literary piece. The pilot residency took place during the 2018 Longines FEI Nations CupTM of Ireland at the Stena Line Dublin Horse Show, a highlight on the Irish sporting and social calendars.
Literature is of utmost importance to the city of Dublin, and to Ireland. This pilot project sees the RDS beginning to support writers, thus expanding the Society's contribution to the cultural development and enrichment of Ireland.
About the 2018 RDS Writer-in-Residence - Ian Maleney
Ian Maleney is a young writer from Offaly who is based in Dublin. He works primarily in creative non-fiction. Prior to the 2018 Longines FEI Nations CupTM of Ireland at the Stena Line Dublin Horse Show, Ian had never experienced the Show and had little knowledge of the equestrian industry. In the months leading up to the Show he carried out research in the RDS Library and familiarised himself with the RDS grounds.
Throughout the 2018 Show Ian conducted interviews with numerous personalities involved in the Show and produced a creative writing piece based on his experiences. This piece will be disseminated via a reading at an RDS Library Speaker Series event in Spring 2019 and will be published in the 2019 Longines FEI Nations CupTM of Ireland at the Stena Line Dublin Horse Show Programme.
Ian is due to release his debut Minor Monuments in Spring 2019. This collection of essays was listed by the Irish Times and Irish Independent as a book to look forward to in 2019.
