George Francis FitzGerald (1851-1901), Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin and Member of the RDS is one of the great under-appreciated physicists in the history of science.
The RDS Library holds over 2,000 of FitzGerald's letters, mostly sent to him, while approximately 400 letters have been identified in other archives in Britain, Europe and the US.
During 2008, the RDS Library and the RDS Committee of Science and Technology collaborated on a project to digitise these letters and generate a fully searchable index which is available on the web through the online library catalogue.
The Heritage Council generously provided funding to enable the letters to be properly stored in order to minimize damage from handling.
Further information on this project is available in the RDS Foundation section.
Note: Due to required maintenance the RDS Library Online Catalogue is currently unavailable. Search queries and book renewals can be directed to the Library desk via email email@example.com or via telephone on +353 (0)1 2407 254. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
