The annual RDS Craft Awards showcase and reward excellence in Irish craft. Established in 1968, the Awards follow an RDS tradition of promoting Irish craft which dates back to the nineteenth century. The RDS Craft Awards is an open platform for Irish craftspeople to have their work assessed by an independent judging panel of Irish and international craft experts.
The 2016 Awards has a prize fund in excess of €30,000 and is now closed for entries. For key dates please click here.
Each year, the winning and commended entries are showcased at the RDS Craft Awards Exhibition during the Dublin Horse Show. This year the Craft Awards exhibition will also travel to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Co Mayo and prize winners will be exhibited again at the National Crafts & Design Fair in early December in the RDS.
Encouraging emerging Irish talent is at the heart of the RDS mission and specifically the goal of the RDS arts programme which is to: provide a platform that supports the transition from student to emerging artist; encouraging the pursuit of a career in visual arts, crafts or music.
Reflecting our goal and following an external evaluation of the Awards, since 2015 the work of emerging and established makers is judged separately with specific awards for emerging craftspeople. There is no longer a first round of judging, ALL entries must be delivered to the RDS for judging. Please click here to see a full list of all Awards.
There are 12 categories in each strand of the competition, only category winners can be considered for the overall Awards of Excellence. Please read the specific rules of entry for the competition as well as the rules which govern each specific Award. Please note that one one entry per person is allowed and there is an entry fee to apply. Please click here to download a PDF of the 2016 competition structure.
An expert judging panel selects the prize winners and those to be included in the annual RDS Craft Awards Exhibition. Successful entrants are notified by email. Prize winners are announced at the exhibition launch in the RDS Concert Hall.
