The RDS has been working with the Ballymun Initiative for Third-level Education (B.I.T.E) programme since the early 1990's to increase the level of participation in third-level education among students who attend the Ballymun Comprehensive schools.
The RDS provides financial assistance to students from the Ballymun area pursuing higher-level science and mathematics for the Leaving Certificate and those undertaking third-level science courses. Bursaries are awarded annually in recognition of the students’ strong commitment to their studies and to date have provided much needed support enabling the students to pay exam and registration fees, cover the costs of travel and buy text books.
The bursaries are presented each year in November at the BITE graduation ceremony which is an opportunity for the students’ hard work and effort to be publicly acknowledged by both the RDS and the BITE Management Committee. To date more than 170 students have gone on to complete third-level diploma, degree and postgraduate courses.
“Thanks to the RDS I am truly enjoying my academic life at third-level. I have been able to purchase much needed text books and other course material and aim to do really well this year. Thanks again!” Karl Murphy, 2008 bursary recipient.
