In celebration of the memory of John Tyndall, the renowned populariser of science, the RDS hosts an annual lecture on physics for schools which is aimed specifically at those in Transition Year and above.
Born in Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow John Tyndall (1820−1893), in addition to making many major discoveries in Physics, was a brilliant public speaker and author of many books. He was among the first to explain why the sky is blue – a phenomenon known as the Tyndall Effect. His research presaged what we now call ‘global warming’ so much a feature of today’s concerns.
The Tyndall Lecture is organised by the Institute of Physics in Ireland and usually takes place early in the year. It travels to venues outside Dublin, north and south of the country and remains popular with students and their teachers. The RDS is proud to have been the Dublin host of the Tyndall Lecture since the late 1960s.
