Library Ireland Week, RDS Speaker Series, Seamus Dowling 'Thank You, Partner' - A History of Bridge in Ireland

The Pembroke Library and the RDS Library have come together to jointly host a special talk on a very widely played game, to mark Library Ireland Week. Popular since the late 19th century, bridge was organised nationally and became an international competitive game during the 1930s. However, little was known about the origins and history of the game in Ireland until Seamus Dowling undertook the research that culminated in the writing of ‘Thank You, Partner – The History of Bridge in Ireland,’ published in 2009.

Seamus is a national champion, international competitor, bridge teacher – he developed the national bridge-teacher training programme, tournament director, journalist – he has written for magazines and is international reporter for The Irish Times. He was president of the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland and of the Irish Bridge Union. He hosts bridge holidays at Hotel Westport and for Cruise Holidays, Abbey Street.

Augustine Henry Forestry Lecture: Multifunctional Plantation Forestry in Atlantic Europe

From Ireland to Portugal, the forests of Atlantic Europe are dominated by plantations established in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These forests were established, in the main, for productive purposes; most, but not all, for wood production. Today, the modern concept of sustainable forest management demands of plantation forests an array of goods and services which they were never designed to provide. The differing, often innovative approaches to the multifunctional use of plantation forests offer the possibility of new strategies for the management of forests in Ireland.

The RDS, in association with the Society of Irish Foresters are delighted to welcome Professor Ted Farrell, Director of the UCD Forest Ecosystem Research Group, who will address these issues in the 2010 Augustine Henry Forestry Lecture entitled “Multifunctional Plantation Forestry in Atlantic Europe”. Professor Farrell has been at the forefront of research into the role that forests will play in the changing social, political and ecological landscape of the 21st century.
At the moment, all oil and coal and over 90% of gas is imported to Ireland. As 55% of all electricity consumption in Ireland is dependent on gas, challenges in the security of energy reserves will be discussed.

Irish Chamber Orchestra - Leon Fleischer

Leon Fleischer has the most famous right hand in classical music – famous because for 30 years it didn’t work. Hailed as ‘the pianistic find of the century’ in his teens, he enjoyed worldwide acclaim in the 1950’s and 60’s, before a rare disease lost him the use of his right hand. Confounding medical experts, he made a triumphantly two-handed return to the stage, where he is once again celebrated as one of the musical giants of his time.

Science Speak

When we talk to our policy makers or captains of industry about the tools that will take Ireland out of recession and place it firmly on the road to recovery the discussion inevitably moves to science, technology and innovation.

We have bright young people in our universities doing incredible research - research that has global promise and some which has genuine commercial potential also. Science Speak is a unique event that provides a platform for the best postgraduate science communicators from each of the seven Irish universities to come together to present their research to a non-specialist, lay audience.

The objective is to explain what they do, why they are doing it and what results they have found. Past topics have included everything from kidney disease to predicting water quality. Come along to hear about the latest developments in frontier science and ask the questions you have always wanted the answer to but didn’t know who to ask!

Science Speak is organised by the RDS and The Irish Times in association with Irish Universities Promoting Science.

RDS Speaker Series Mary Mulvihill – ‘Lab Coats and Lace’

Mary Mulvihill is an award-winning science writer and broadcaster, has edited two collections of biographies of historic Irish women scientists – Stars, Shells and Bluebells, and Lab Coats and Lace, both published by Women in Technology & Science (WITS). Mary is also the author of Ingenious Ireland and Drive like a Woman, Shop like a Man. Amongst others she will talk about the astronomer Mrs Annie Maunder, born in County Tyrone in 1868, Alice Everett (1865-1949) a professional physicist who contributed to the early development of television and Mrs Anne Jellicoe, who founded the first vocational training college for women in Ireland or Britain in 1861. Just some of the adventurous Irishwomen who led the non-traditional way in the early days of science and industry.

Cancer Treatment - Does the Immune System have all the Answers?

Each year in Ireland, there are over 20,000 new cases of cancer and over 7,500 people die from cancer, accounting for almost one quarter of the annual death toll (Source: Irish Cancer Society). Faced with such a hard hitting reality we must do everything in our power to help combat this disease.

Research is helping to identify the causes of cancer and is making great strides in terms of improving methods of diagnosis and treatment. Professor Jim Johnston, Deputy Director of the Centre for Infection and Immunity at Queen’s University Belfast, is one of the many researchers contributing to the search for new novel cancer treatments. More specifically, Professor Johnston’s research involves understanding the underlying mechanisms behind novel families of suppressor molecules, occurring naturally within all our bodies, which may have beneficial therapeutic effects.

This lecture is part of an annual RDS Irish Times lecture programme organised in association with the Irish Society for Immunology. For further information, please visit www.rds.ie/science.

Paul McCartney

Out of all the former Beatles, Paul McCartney by far had the most successful solo career, maintaining a constant presence in the British and American charts during the '70s and '80s. In America alone, he had nine number one singles and seven number one albums during the first 12 years of his solo career. Although he sold records, McCartney never attained much critical respect, especially when compared to his former partner John Lennon. Then again, he pursued a different path than Lennon, deciding early on that he wanted to be in a rock band. Little more than a year after the Beatles' breakup, McCartney had formed Wings with his wife, Linda, and the group remained active for the next ten years, racking up a string of hit albums, singles, and tours in the meantime. By the late '70s, many critics were taking potshots at McCartney's effortlessly melodic songcraft, but that didn't stop the public from buying his records. His sales didn't slow considerably until the late '80s, and he retaliated with his first full-scale tour since the '70s, which was a considerable success. During the '90s, McCartney recorded less frequently, concentrating on projects like his first classical recording, a techno album, and the Beatles' Anthology.
