Framing Ireland's Energy Policy for 2020

The current economic crisis has emphasised the importance of the competitiveness of the economy. Heightened risk has also raised the cost of capital facing all players in what is a very capital intensive industry. The need to dramatically reduce Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 remains, but it is now more important than ever that this is done in a cost effective manner. Finally, ensuring a secure supply of energy remains a critical task for government. The situation is further complicated by the evolving policy environment outside Ireland – in the EU and in the UK.

In our continuing series of RDS Energy Lectures, Professor FitzGerald will address this complex web of objectives and constraints, focusing on some of the key priorities for Irish energy policy.

Professor John FitzGerald is the President of the Irish Economic Association; he is also a member of the Irish Energy Research Council and of the High Level Group on Green Enterprise. He studied at University College Dublin where he took masters degrees successively in History and in Economics. Joining the ESRI in 1984, Professor FitzGerald is responsible for research on Macroeconomics, Energy and Environment and for the Institute's Energy Policy Research Centre.

Metamaterials and the Science of Invisibility - Sir John Pendry

This lecture is part of the UCD Physics - RDS Distinguished Speaker Series 2012. In celebration of Physics and Dublin's status as European City of Science 2012, UCD School of Physics has teamed up with the Royal Dublin Society to bring some of the world's leading physicists to speak in Dublin about the latest developments in their fields of research. The topics include the exotic physics of cloaking devices, the role of physics in biology, the use of lasers in medicine and a profile of mysterious Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The lectures are free and suitable for a general audience. Come along and be surprised!

Speaking in advance of his lecture Sir John Pendry, Imperial College UK, explained how refractive materials give limited control of light: we can fashion lenses, and construct waveguides, but complete control is beyond simple refracting materials. Ideally we might wish to channel and direct light as we please just as we might divert the flow of a fluid. The laws of electromagnetism show that we can achieve just that and metamaterials open the door to this new design paradigm for optics, providing the properties required to give complete control of light. This lecture will explore the potential applications of this field, including the option to steer light around a hidden region, creating a cloak of invisibility.

Price Volatility and Farm Income Stabilisation

Dublin has been selected as the European City of Science for 2012. With the generous support of the RDS, Teagasc and the Agricultural Economics Society of Ireland (AESI), are delighted to host this 123rd EAAE seminar with a specific focus on policies designed to manage price volatility and address farm income stabilisation.

In recent years commodity markets have become more volatile with substantial movements in prices relative to historical means. Input markets have experienced similar volatility, in terms of feed costs, fertiliser and energy. Ultimately, farm incomes have been subject to considerable fluctuation. Price and income volatility is now recognised as an important issue by governments and policy makers around the world, farm and food representative organisations, development aid agencies and other stakeholders. In recent years, direct income support policy has been the principal mechanism by which farm incomes have been stabilised.

There is, therefore, a need to explore new mechanisms to reduce or prevent price and income volatility. Given these considerations, it is appropriate that the research community turns its attention to the policies designed to address such volatility. The purpose of the 123rd EAAE seminar is to provide a forum to showcase and examine research relating to price and income volatility and income stabilisation and support.

While the conference will be primarily aimed at academics and other researchers, it may also be of interest to policy makers and those in the agri-food sector tasked with managing volatility.

This talk will examine the stories, the histories and the evolution of Irish museums and galleries over the past three centuries. What started as a 'cabinet of curiosities' forming an important asset in a gentleman's home, would become, in the new millennium, museums and galleries that are at once virtual and physical spaces.

This fascinating story of collectors and collections will demonstrate how they form the basis of our national collections and reflect our shared heritage.

The Dublin International Piano Competition

The Dublin International Piano Competition was established in 1988. A triennial event, it was sponsored for the first three competitions by GPA. In 1994, the sponsorship was taken over by Guardian Insurance and when AXA acquired the company in 1999 they also took over title sponsorship which they sustained for 10 years. The Dublin International Piano Competition is now supported by a private benefactor.

Since its formation the Dublin Competition’s reputation has grown in stature, and now ranks among the most important piano competitions in the world. It offers a generous prize fund, but perhaps the most important prize is the prestigious list of engagements secured for the winner. These include début concerts in London, New York, Paris and of course Ireland. Previous winners have launched highly successful international careers from this springboard. Chaired by John O’Conor, who is also the Artistic Director, and adjudicated by distinguished members of the music profession from around the world, the Competition attracts an enormous international entry.

Deadmau5

Following his acclaimed sell-out show at The O2 in December 2010, deadmau5 is set to return to Dublin and Belfast.

The ever increasing popularity of deadmau5 in Ireland was demonstrated when he made the giant leap from playing The Academy in October 2009 to performing a sell-out show at The O2, Dublin in front of 12,000 ecstatic fans. He went on to headline the second stage this year’s Oxegen festival where he performed in front of a capacity crowd.

deadmau5 is firmly established as one of the most innovative and popular electronic live acts globally. His driving foresight is constantly pushing the technological boundaries of his stage show. In May 2010 he unveiled the visual orgy of the cube stage and his highly anticipated L.E.D ‘mau5ehead’. The year climaxed with a 17,000 capacity sell out show at London’s Earls Court. He is the first ever electronic artist to headline the legendary venue. Additionally the dancefloor icon’s multi award winning albums have seen him achieve that rare balance, appealing to both the clubbing cognoscenti and musical masses.
It aims to: promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church; help improve our understanding and celebration of the liturgy; draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist. These aims are achieved through a programme of pastoral preparation in the years leading up to the Congress and a programme of liturgical and cultural events, lectures and workshops, a Eucharistic Procession and the massive closing ceremony.
