RDS Primary Science Fair a Success!

For the first time ever the RDS took over the sponsorship and organising of the RDS Primary Science Fair at this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

RDS Primary Science Fair
After much hard work almost 100 determined primary schools braved the winter snow and ice to ensure that the RDS Primary Science Fair took place with flying colours. We enjoyed hearing about all of the fascinating projects in person with topics ranging from how conductivity in metal works to the physical properties of slime! The enthusiasm and the hard work of the teachers and students were truly inspiring.

We would like all teachers/students involved in the 2010 Fair to share their experiences in order that others thinking of taking the plunge and participating in the 2011 Fair can see how beneficial it is. So please feel free to leave a comment and let us know how was the RDS Primary Science Fair 2010 for you!

This is the most exciting event which children must attend. It is a wonderful preamble and preparation for entering the Young Scientist in secondary school. Our 16 children from 4th - 6th are still beaming after their educational excursion. We will definitely try and be there again next year with another interested group.

Our sixth entereda project and spent the day showing it off and viewing the others exhibits. They had a magnificent time and are already looking forward to attending next year. We took our fifth and fourth class to lend their support and they are so enthused they are planning next year's project already. I have lead many educational visits/trips and this is definitely among the best ever. A fabulous day out for students, teachers and parents!

It was a wonderful experience for the children to exhibit their project at a national event. The children also had an exciting time exploring all the different activities. They were very proud of their trophy and certificates.

A great day! The children prepared for weeks doing a survey on healthy lifestyle. They presented their results at the RDS and continued their work by surveying anyone of the general public who was near the stand. Well organised event, thanks to RDS. We had a problem with a couple of secondary school boys passing comments to our girls and security were on the ball in investigating the matter. Some sec school pupils with signs offering "free hugs" should have been stopped.

Dr Tony Scott, cofounder of the Young Scientist Exhibition says:

What a triumph !! The Primary Science was just fantastic. There was a great buzz and parents, teachers and pupils seemed to really enjoy and gain benefit from it. I really would have liked to have been able to spend more time with these marvelous enthusiastic young students and learn about their projects. With pupils like these so interested in science, the future of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is assured Here's to next year - without the snow and ice !!

This was our 10th time to exhibit a project at the Primary Science Fair and this year was definately one of our best! The children had spent many weeks (between carol services) preparing their project on Isaac Newton and as many of our experiments were 'hands on', they derived great benefit from interacting with visitors. The organisation of the event was terrific and the hours of hard work certainly paid off. We felt very well looked after - thank you! Looking forward to next year!!

A great event. Thanks for organising it. We will be back again next year, for the 7th year. Here is an account of what one boy wrote of his experiences...

This year's BT Young Scientist exhibition was probably the best science experience I have ever got. We arrived early in the morning at about 10 am. We hung up all our posters. The scientists that were chosen were Isaac Newton, Alexandra Volt and Thomas Edison. Some of the experiments that were shown were electric circuit, the potatoe cannon and so. We were split into groups of 4 and were allowed to go and explore the exhibition. We visited IBM which are a computer company.

We visited Google, the European Union and the Irish Health Centre. There was quite a lot of free stuff. The free stuff included Squiggy hearts, rubbers, chains, yo yo's, Tie clips and so on. My favourite project was the attack of the germs. It shows all the germs on your hand before you wash your hands. They showed the outcome on nutrient aga. We went to see a BMX show and then saw a primary school show. After that we went back to school. When we returned it was 3 pm.
