2016 Gold Medal
The 2016 Gold Medal was awarded to John Moloney on December 2. John was instrumental in turning Glanbia into the significant international player it has become. During his time at the head of Glanbia, profits increased from €59.6 million in 2001 to €212 million in 2012. As well as expanding into global markets in a major way, John provided the vision and ambition to build the infrastructure which has helped Glanbia spearhead innovation in the agri-food sector over the past decade. Perhaps his greatest legacy for the future of the dairy sector in Ireland is the €235 million dairy processing facility at Belview Port in County Kilkenny. The largest single investment by an indigenous company since the building of the Ardnacrusha power station, Belview has the capacity to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of dairy powders a year and is worth an estimated €400 million to the Irish economy annually.
Since its inception in 1992 the Medal has been awarded to many of Ireland’s most prominent business people including: Dr Peter Sutherland; Sir Michael Smurfit of Jefferson Smurfit, Dr Craig Barrett of Intel, Kieran McGowan of the IDA, Bernard Collins of VHI Healthcare, Willie Walsh of International Airlines Group, Dr Pearse Lyons of Alltech, Owen Killian of Aryzta, Gary McGann formerly of Smurfit Kappa Group and most recently John Moloney.
These past winners have made a huge contribution to the socio-economic situation in Ireland and through their success have helped bring about the self-confidence we now have in our own ability to not only succeed when times are good but to meet head on these challenging times that we now face to develop our economy in new and dynamic ways.
